Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne are two renowned spa towns in the Czech Republic, each offering unique natural healing resources. Although geographically close, their mineral springs differ significantly in origin, temperature, chemical composition, and therapeutic application.

Mineral Springs of Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne: what difference?

🔬 Geological Origin of the Springs

The springs of Karlovy Vary have a volcanic, geothermal origin. These are deep thermal waters rising from the Earth’s crust, formed through ancient geological activity.

In contrast, the Mariánské Lázně springs are surface-level and formed through natural filtration of rainwater through mineral-rich soils. The region is also rich in natural carbon dioxide, which influences both the chemical profile and therapeutic effects of the waters.

🌡️ Temperature and Physical Properties

  • Karlovy Vary’s springs are hot, ranging from 30°C to 72°C, with low carbon dioxide content and a slightly alkaline reaction.
  • Mariánské Lázně springs are cold, ranging from 7°C to 10°C, and naturally rich in CO₂, making them highly effervescent.

These differences determine how the waters are used. Karlovy Vary focuses on thermal and drinking cures, while Mariánské Lázně offers inhalations, baths, and gentle internal treatments.

💧 Mineral Composition

Karlovy Vary water is classified as sodium-bicarbonate-sulfate with high mineralization. This composition stimulates digestion, enhances metabolism, and supports liver and pancreatic regeneration.

Mariánské Lázně boasts diverse mineral waters, including sulfate, ferruginous (iron-rich), calcium, and carbonated types. This variety allows for highly individualized treatment programs.

Note: Due to its composition, Mariánské Lázně water is not used to produce evaporated salt, unlike Karlovy Vary, where mineral salt is extracted from the thermal springs and used therapeutically.
