The Diana Observation Tower and its funicular railway are among the must-see attractions in Karlovy Vary. The funicular is not just a convenient way to reach the top of the hill but also a piece of living history.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Karlovy Vary was rapidly developing as a world-class spa town. Plans were made for a large leisure complex including the Diana Tower, a restaurant, forest trails, and scenic viewpoints.
However, the steep uphill walk was exhausting for many spa visitors — especially the elderly and those undergoing treatment. The solution was the construction of a funicular. At the time of its launch in 1912, it was the longest funicular in Austria-Hungary, a true engineering achievement.
For more than 110 years, the line has been running continuously without long-term interruptions.
The ride takes only about 3 minutes, but it feels like a little adventure:

At the top, visitors will find a full leisure complex:
The lower station is located right in the city center, behind the famous Grandhotel Pupp.

It’s just a short walk from the Teplá River and the Mill Colonnade, making it easy to include in your sightseeing tour.
💡 Tip: buy a return ticket, but if you like hiking, consider riding up and walking down along the forest trails.
The funicular is the perfect choice for anyone who wants great views without a tiring climb.
✨ A ride on the funicular to Diana Tower is a must-do experience to truly appreciate the beauty of Karlovy Vary from above.
