New Year’s Eve in Karlovy Vary 2027: Where to Celebrate and What to Know

event_note
20.09.2026

Karlovy Vary in December is a completely different city. Without the summer crowds, without queues at the springs, without organised tour groups on the promenade. Christmas lights along the Teplá, steam rising from Vřídlo in the cold air, the smell of mulled wine and trdelník from the market. And a quiet that simply doesn’t exist here in summer.

Spending New Year’s Eve in Karlovy Vary is not a mass tourist experience. It is an intimate celebration in a historic spa city. Here is how it works.

New Year's Eve in Karlovy Vary 2027: Where to Celebrate and What to Know

When to Book

Karlovy Vary is a small city. Good hotels are limited, and New Year’s dates go early. If you’re planning 31 December — book at least 2–3 months in advance, ideally earlier.

A New Year’s package and regular accommodation are different things. Most hotels sell packages for 31 December that include a mandatory New Year’s programme. Simply “booking a room” for that night is often not possible — only with the package.

Where to Spend New Year’s Eve: Hotel Overview

Grandhotel Pupp ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Format: gala evening in the historic Grand Ballroom, live music, casino

The main hotel of Karlovy Vary and the most prestigious New Year’s venue in the city. A Neo-Baroque hall with gilding and stucco, an orchestra, dress code. The Pupp Casino operates on New Year’s Eve — for those who want to feel the Casino Royale atmosphere in a literal sense.

Package prices are not published — enquiry only. This is always the top price segment.

Christmas Market: When and Where

The Karlovy Vary Christmas market runs from late November to early January on the main square (náměstí Republiky) in the city centre.

What’s there:

  • Hot mulled wine (svařené víno) and punch
  • Trdelník — traditional Czech pastry on an open flame
  • Local crafts and handmade souvenirs
  • Decorations and Christmas delicacies
  • Ice rink (depending on the year)

The Karlovy Vary market is small and intimate compared to Prague or Brno. That is its strength: no crowds, you can walk freely, taste, and look.

Best time: evenings after 17:00 — when it gets dark and the fairy lights create a genuine Christmas atmosphere.

Springs and Colonnades: Open as Always

The thermal springs — the main value of Karlovy Vary — are open around the clock and free all year. 31 December, 1 January — no exceptions. The colonnades are covered, so rain and snow are no obstacle.

A morning walk on 1 January at the springs with hot mineral water in hand is one of the best ways to begin a new year. The city is quiet, few people around, steam rising over the water.

Where to Start: City Hub Feel Karlovy Vary

If you’ve arrived for New Year’s and haven’t been to Karlovy Vary before — start at City Hub “Feel Karlovy Vary” on Lázeňská 14.

Documentary “Karlovy Vary: The Power of Water” — 60 minutes on the geology of the springs, the history of the resort, and the logic of balneology. Screenings daily at 16:00 and 20:00.

“Journey Through the Karlovy Vary Region” — 15 minutes, a visual guide to the region. Screenings every 30 minutes from 10:00 to 19:30.

Also here: the authorised Karlovy Vary salt and cosmetics shop, English-language consultation, excursion bookings.

Practical Tips for a New Year’s Trip

Book early. Good hotels for 31 December sell out 2–3 months in advance, sometimes earlier.

Check package conditions. New Year’s supplement, dress code, whether breakfast on 1 January is included — confirm all of this when booking.

Bring warm clothes. Karlovy Vary is a valley in the mountains. December–January: usually 0–5°C, sometimes colder. The promenade along the Teplá is beautiful but cold.

Plan walking routes. The old town is compact and entirely pedestrian. Vřídlo → Mill Colonnade → Christmas market → Grandhotel Pupp → Diana Tower (weather permitting) — one beautiful route.

Book restaurants in advance. On 31 December and 1 January, restaurants in the centre are full. Call ahead.

Extending the Holiday in the Region

From Karlovy Vary it’s easy to make a 1–2 day trip:

  • Loket Castle — 14 km, almost no tourists in winter
  • Bečov Castle — 25 km, Reliquary of St Maurus
  • Prague — 130 km, ~1.5 hours by car or bus
  • Dresden — 170 km, ~2.5 hours. The famous Striezelmarkt Christmas market (since 1434) runs until the end of December

All these routes can be arranged with us — comfortable transfer, professional guide, everything included. Book at City Hub on Lázeňská 14 or online:

Souvenirs: What to Take Home
